Interoperability – you know you want it

Last week I travelled to Taipei for Computex 2013 to demonstrate our latest Qi compatible wireless charging technology.  What we presented was a wireless receiver that can be charged on multiple Qi transmitters, including our next generation wireless charging pad enabling multi-device charging and full spatial freedom with full Qi interoperability.

You can see the demo itself in this video which highlights our intention for it to become integrated directly into smartphones – as we have demonstrated in our Proxi Integrated Smartphone Solution previously.

However, what the demo and the underlying technology essentially shows is not only a pathway towards a better, more advanced Qi standard – but more importantly, the first step towards what everybody ultimately wants from wireless charging – interoperability.

It is something our customers have requested from us and we have set on the path to deliver – while maintaining the advantages that our Dynamic Harmonization Control technology provides.

Interoperability means that consumers have the ability and confidence to use multiple smartphones on any (Qi) compatible charging pad with the knowledge that it will not only charge, but do so efficiently and reliably.  Unlike wired chargers, wireless by nature provides the opportunity to break free from model-specific charging connectors – people want to buy one pad which will charge all their phones, anywhere, without discrimination.

PowerbyProxi made a conscious choice to join the WPC in May to push the advancement of what we considered to be the leading wireless charging standard in the market (Qi) so that consumers can experience fully functional, flexible, convenient, and ultimately superior wireless charging sooner.  We have only been a member for a few weeks but have already started demonstrating results that show how our multi-device and spatially free charging systems are interoperable with Qi.

You can be sure that as a member of the WPC we will continue to work with it’s members extend the specifications and the functionality of the current Qi standard while ensuring greater compatibility within the Qi ecosystem.  Ultimately keeping the consumer our number 1 priority.

Why PowerbyProxi Joined the WPC, Consumers Vote with their Wallets

You may have heard that today PowerbyProxi announced it has become a member of the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) and joined its management team. As you may know, with the exception of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) Working Group 4 – focused on an highly resonant wireless power, ), PowerbyProxi has chosen not to join a standards organization until now. So what’s changed?

Simply put we are joining the WPC to deliver what customers have been telling us they want:  better user experience with spatial freedom and multi-device charging and wireless solutions to more consumer devices.

We believe that consumers “vote with their wallets” and buy products that meet their needs.

Established in 2008, the WPC is a pioneer and leader that developed an interoperable specification and created an unparalleled ecosystem of suppliers to deliver the best products to market.  These products carry the Qi logo and today, Qi is by far the most established wireless power solution with more products in more countries—yet another reason why we joined the WPC. In fact, the WPC represents 130 companies supplying 200 products into an installed base of tens of millions of consumer devices.  Qi products and charging locations are available in US, Europe, Middle East, Asia Pacific, at such places as airports and cafes. The momentum continues with new products announced from leading companies such as the Samsung Galaxy S4, Google Nexus 4, Nokia Lumia models, LG Optimus G Pro and many more. We’ve also seen car companies begin to adopt Qi – cars such as the Toyota Avalon and Prius and the 2014 Jeep Cherokee have all been announced with Qi compatibility.

Leveraging its ecosystem and installed base, the WPC is expanding rapidly and will be the first to market with a wide range of new product categories and features, including highly resonant solutions and backward compatibility, with the help of PowerbyProxi:

  • Beyond smartphones, wireless power solutions will include tablets, ultrabooks, notebooks, kitchen appliances, and more.
  • The next level of consumer convenience:
    • spatial freedom, no need to align the consumer device to the charging pad
    • multi-device charging allowing you to simultaneously charge on the same pad multiple smartphones, tablets, and others.

Here at PowerbyProxi we have deep expertise in highly resonant systems with field-proven solutions in industrial and consumer electronics ranging from less than one watt to kilowatts.

We have seen other wireless power ecosystems formed.  They are late to market with limited members and geography.  What new features and consumer convenience are they planning to provide?  Highly resonant with spatial freedom and multi-device?

We don’t want fragmentation in the industry, it doesn’t serve consumers. Instead, we want to continue to focus on giving consumers the solutions they want in products they can buy today or in the very near future.
